Nothing embodies winter events quite like Christmas festivities, and Christmas in Breckenridge is nothing short of extraordinary. The first Saturday of December marks the annual Lighting of Breckenridge and the Race of Santas, filling the town with festive spirit and a touch of playful fun.
The holiday cheer kicks off with the Race of the Santas on Main Street—a joyful competition where participants of all ages showcase their best Santa outfits. Even four-legged companions join in, dressed in festive attire, creating endless photo opportunities and heartwarming scenes.
While joining the race is thrilling, simply watching the spectacle and mingling with locals offers its own holiday charm. Ullr Fest — December
Another unique and quirky winter event in Breckenridge is the Ullr Fest. Steeped in Scandinavian mythology, the festival pays homage to Ullr (pronounced Oool-er), the Norse god of skiing.
The first time I heard about Ullr Fest, I thought my girlfriend was pranking me. A festival for a Norse ski god? In Colorado? But then I attended in 2023, and it's easily the most entertaining winter event I've ever been to. The parade alone is worth the trip. I watched a group dressed as Viking penguins march past, followed by someone in a full Yeti costume riding a decorated snowmobile.
Among the festival's standout highlights is the parade down Main Street, featuring snow-themed floats and participants dressed in eccentric costumes. Other attractions include the lively talent show, the blazing Ullr Bonfire, and the daring Ice Plunge. The event also aims to break (and often succeeds in breaking) the "unofficial" world record for the longest shotski®, a communal ski equipped with shot glasses that participants drink from simultaneously.
The Ice Plunge perfectly embodies the festival's adventurous spirit, with bold participants diving into a freezing pond through a hole in the ice. Even if you don't take the plunge, the festival's vibrant atmosphere and eccentric festivities are sure to leave you smiling and make your visit to Breckenridge truly unforgettable.

International Snow Sculpture Championships — January
One of the most celebrated winter events in Colorado, the International Snow Sculpture Championships are held every January in Breckenridge. This annual competition brings together artists from around the world to craft magnificent works of art from snow, captivating everyone who attends.
Spectators can marvel as skilled artists transform massive 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of snow into intricate sculptures. Once completed, the sculptures are illuminated at night, creating a magical ambiance for an evening stroll along West Adams Avenue near the Riverwalk Center. Best of all, this is a free event, so there's no need to worry about purchasing tickets in advance.

Warm up after a day on the slopes with a cup of hot cocoa or craft cocktails at one of Breckenridge's cozy après-ski spots. The town's local restaurants cater to every craving, offering hearty mountain meals and fine dining options. There's nothing quite like settling into a charming corner table, sipping a good glass of wine, and indulging in mouthwatering cuisine with the ones you love.
My parents' favorite move is finding a table at one of the Main Street restaurants around 6 PM, ordering a bottle of wine, and just watching the snow fall through the big windows. They've been doing this same routine for twenty years, and they claim they'll never get tired of it.
Stunning Winter Scenery
The Rocky Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop, with snow-blanketed peaks that look straight out of a winter movie. If you're seeking postcard-perfect scenery, Breckenridge is your ideal destination for an unforgettable snowy escape.
Accessibility
Just a short drive from Denver International Airport, Breckenridge is easy to reach. Shuttles and local transportation options make getting around simple, so you won't need a car—unless you want to explore nearby towns and attractions at your own pace, which is another great way to experience the best of Colorado.
Quick tips for enjoying winter in Breckenridge
-
Dress in Layers: Breckenridge temperatures range from 10-30°F in December and 5-25°F in January, with evenings often dropping below zero. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell to stay warm and dry.
 -
Stay Hydrated: Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet elevation, where the high altitude can dehydrate you quickly. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily and limit alcohol consumption to prevent altitude sickness symptoms like headaches and fatigue.
 -
Rent or Book and Accommodation Early: Peak winter season (December-January) fills up 2-3 months in advance. Reserve your lodging, lift tickets, and ski rentals early. Breckenridge Ski Resort's website offers advance ticket discounts, and local rental shops like Christy Sports provide online reservations.
 -
Take it Slow: If you're traveling from sea level, give yourself 24-48 hours to adjust to the altitude. Avoid strenuous skiing or snowboarding on your first day; start with easier trails and gradually increase intensity.
 -
Use Free Transportation: The free BreckConnect bus and Town Trolley run every 15-20 minutes throughout Breckenridge, connecting Main Street, the ski resort, and parking areas. Download the Breckenridge Transit app to track real-time bus locations and avoid needing a rental car downtown.
