The best family event of the season. Hundreds of Santas of all ages race down Main Street, dogs join in costume, and the whole town gathers for the lighting of the Town Tree.
Kids can participate, not just watch, and registration is free. The costumes are the point, and the photo opportunities are endless.
Ullr Fest

A 63-year-old festival honoring Ullr, the Norse god of snow, with a parade of snow-themed floats and some genuinely eccentric costumes. Expect Viking helmets, Yetis, and at least one decorated snowmobile.
Kid-appropriate parts: the parade, the bonfire, the talent show, and helmet decorating. Parent note: the shotski and some of the evening programming are adult events, and the Ice Plunge is a spectator activity for most families.
New Year's Eve Fireworks

Fireworks over the base area to bring in 2027. Early enough that kids see the whole thing, which is a real advantage over most New Year's destinations.
International Snow Sculpture Championships

Teams from around the world hand-carve 12-foot-tall, 25-ton blocks of snow using only hand tools. Sculpting week runs January 23 to 27, and viewing week runs January 27 to February 2, open 24 hours.
Go after dark. The sculptures are lit at night and it is a completely different experience. Kids find it genuinely astonishing.

Carter Park Sledding Hill

The best free family activity in Breckenridge, rating 4.9 from visitors. A proper hill with mountain views over the ski resort, and a fenced dog park right beside it.
The detail nobody tells you about: there is a sled shed where families leave sleds behind for the next group. Plenty of visitors turn up with nothing and find something to use. If you buy sleds locally, leaving them there afterward is the done thing.
Parking is tight, particularly midday, so go earlier or be patient.
Maggie Pond Ice Skating
At the base of Peak 9, behind Beaver Run. When it freezes, it becomes one of the most photogenic outdoor rinks in Colorado, with the ski runs rising directly behind it.

Indoor rink plus a covered outdoor sheet, skate rentals, and skate walkers for first-timers. They also run ice bumper cars and Disco Skate Nights with lights and music.
Check the online schedule before you go. Public session times vary daily since the rink shares ice with hockey.

The storm-day answer. Aquatics center with a water slide and leisure pool, an indoor play area equipped for a wide age range, a climbing wall, an indoor track, and an outdoor hot tub with steam and sauna.
One heads up: the pool occasionally runs a waitlist when lifeguard staffing is short, particularly at peak times. Call ahead on a busy afternoon.
Guided Adventures for Families
- Dog sledding with Good Times Adventure Tours, 6061 Tiger Rd, (970) 453-7604. Six miles through the Swan River Valley behind Siberian Huskies, with everyone rotating between mushing and riding. Books out over holiday weeks.
- Sleigh ride dinners at Golden Horseshoe, 6061 Tiger Rd, (970) 453-2005, closed Mondays, with hot chocolate, a bonfire, and draft horses. Or Two Below Zero in Frisco, (970) 453-1520, for a chuckwagon dinner with live entertainment.
- Gold mine tours and tubing at Country Boy Mine, 0542 French Gulch Rd, (720) 458-5387. Underground tour, gold panning, an ore chute slide, donkeys to feed, plus sledding and tubing. Open Wednesday to Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Note there is no indoor restroom, just an authentic outhouse.
- Snowshoeing and snowcat rides at the Breckenridge Nordic Center, 9 Grandview Dr, (970) 453-6855. Their snowcat ride stops at a cabin for hot cocoa and s'mores and finishes with sledding.
- Museums for a cold afternoon. The Edwin Carter Museum houses 3,300 wildlife specimens with a hands-on discovery room, and the Breckenridge Welcome Center & Museum on Main Street is free with interactive exhibits.

Lessons run half day or full day, grouped by age and ability. The check-in process is straightforward: kids get their lift tickets, jackets are tagged, and if they are renting through the school, staff take them to get fitted for equipment so you can head off.
What Parents Should Know
- Pick up rental gear the day before if you can. This is the single most useful tip. The school closes earlier than the rental shops, and children's gear is collected at the school rather than at Breck Sports, which catches families out on a first morning.
- Updates come through the My Epic app. Instructors post progress notes and, for younger children, photos throughout the day. Parents consistently mention this as reassuring.
- Arrive about an hour early on your first day to allow for boot fitting, helmet sizing, and check-in.
- Half days work well for younger or first-time skiers. A full day is a long time for a four year old in ski boots, and ending on a high note matters more than maximizing hours.
- Lessons sell out during Christmas week, Presidents' Day, and spring break. Book when you book lodging, not when you arrive.
- Experiences vary by instructor. Most families report excellent days, though not every group gets the same. If a lesson is not going well, speak to the school rather than waiting it out.
Before Their First Lesson
- Put your phone number in their jacket pocket on a card. Ski school asks for this constantly.
- Layers, not bulk. A child who cannot bend their arms will not enjoy the day. Base layer, mid layer, waterproof shell.
- A second pair of gloves. Whatever they wear in the morning will be soaked by lunch.
- Sunscreen and lip balm. At 9,600 feet with snow reflecting UV, a January sunburn is easy to get.
- Bright colors make spotting your child from the lift considerably easier.

Here is the honest picture, because this trips up a lot of visiting families.
What Breckenridge Does Not Have Much Of
Breckenridge has several excellent licensed childcare centers, including Carriage House, Timberline Learning Center, and Open Arms. But these serve local working families on enrollment, operate weekdays only, and are closed Saturdays and Sundays. Most carry waitlists. They are not drop-in options for a visiting family, and calling them for a Saturday evening will not get you anywhere.
Plan around that. For a visiting family, your realistic options are ski school during the day and an in-home sitter in the evening.

Sitters are limited in a town this size, and Christmas week, New Year's, and Presidents' Day fill first. Arrange childcare at the same time you book lodging and ski school.
Practical Notes for Families
- Altitude affects kids too. Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet. In children it usually shows as crankiness, a headache, or unusual fatigue rather than anything they can describe. Hydrate them more than feels necessary starting the day before you travel, feed them regularly, and make day one a half day.
- Dress for standing still. Most of the holiday events are outdoors in the evening in December. Hand warmers in pockets make a real difference.
- Use the free transit. The town's Free Ride bus and the free BreckConnect Gondola cover most of this list, and our complimentary VIP shuttle covers the rest. You can leave the car parked.
- Pick a meeting point and make sure every child can describe it. "The bottom" is not a meeting point on a 2,900-acre mountain with two base areas.
- Moose are present in Summit County and are genuinely dangerous. Keep your distance and keep dogs leashed.
- Book everything together. Lodging, lessons, childcare, and the guided activities all sell out for the same weeks.
