Breckenridge is one of the largest historical districts in Colorado, and there is far more to a winter trip here than lift tickets. Dog sledding through the Swan River Valley, a gold mine tour 1,000 feet into a mountain, sleigh ride dinners, and a Main Street that has looked much the same for 140 years.
Breckenridge Ski Resort opens Friday, November 6, 2026 and runs into spring. Here are nine things worth building a day around, with addresses, phone numbers, and hours.
One note before you book: several of these close certain days of the week, and winter hours differ from summer. Call ahead.
1. Dog Sledding with Good Times Adventure Tours

The signature Breckenridge winter experience. You glide through the snowy trails of the Swan River Valley behind a team of Siberian Huskies who are visibly thrilled to be working.
Tours run about an hour and a half across a six-mile trail through dense forest and open meadow, and everyone rotates between mushing the sled, riding as a passenger, and following on the accompanying snowmobile. Guides teach you the mushing basics and share the history of the sport.
The dogs are genuinely well cared for, which shows in their energy, and guests routinely describe this as the highlight of their whole trip. Good Times also runs guided snowmobile tours from the same location if that is more your speed.
Book well ahead. This sells out over holiday weeks.
2. Country Boy Mine

Founded in 1887 and one of the most famous mines in Breckenridge. Guided tours take you deep into narrow, dimly lit tunnels past original equipment, with guides who tell the story of how miners actually lived and worked.
Beyond the tour: gold panning, a long ore chute slide, friendly donkeys to feed, and a general store. In winter they also run sledding and tubing on the property, which makes this a genuine half-day with kids rather than a one-hour stop.
Two practical notes: there is no indoor restroom, just an authentic outhouse. And boot rentals are available for a few dollars if your shoes are not up to wet ground.
One of the highest-rated attractions in town, and the closure Monday and Tuesday catches visitors out constantly.
3. Escape Room Breckenridge

The storm-day answer, and one of the highest-rated attractions in all of Summit County. Multiple themed rooms ranging from a historical mine shaft to a futuristic space adventure, with difficulty levels suitable for beginners through enthusiasts.
Staff are friendly and provide hints when you need them, which keeps it fun rather than frustrating. Works brilliantly for families, groups, and teenagers who have declared themselves too cool for everything else.
Open until 9:30 p.m., so it also works as an evening activity after a ski day. Mountain Time Escape Rooms at 505 S Main St, (970) 423-6556, is a second excellent option with a Breckenridge-themed paranormal room.
4. Sleigh Ride Dinner at Golden Horseshoe

Gourmet hot chocolate by the stove, a bonfire while you wait, then a horse-drawn sleigh through the forest behind a pair of draft horses, with warm blankets on every seat.
The full experience pairs the ride with the Diamond Dixie dinner theater, a lively historical show with genuinely good food. Guests consistently single out the staff, the horses, and the hot chocolate bar.
If you would rather be in Frisco, Two Below Zero at 616 Recreation Way, (970) 453-1520, runs a chuckwagon dinner and sleigh ride with the Jackman Brothers show. Also excellent, also books out.
5. Ice Skating at Stephen C. West Ice Arena

An indoor rink plus a covered outdoor rink, with skate rentals in good condition and assist devices for first-timers. Mountain views from the outdoor sheet, affordable, and welcoming to complete beginners.
Check the online schedule before you go. The rink shares ice between public skating, hockey, and stick-and-puck sessions, and times vary considerably day to day. This is the single most important thing to know about visiting.
6. Sapphire Point Overlook

A short, easy half-mile loop at 9,500 feet with panoramic views over Dillon Reservoir and the surrounding ranges. Accessible to all abilities, with interpretive signs and benches along the way.
In winter the reservoir freezes and the whole scene goes quiet and white, which is arguably better than the summer version. The trail is walkable in winter with traction devices on your boots, and the parking area is plowed.
Local tip: this is a sunrise spot. The light coming over the ridgeline onto the frozen reservoir is remarkable, and you will often have it to yourself.
7. Broken Compass Brewing

A rotating lineup of beers brewed on site, from classic IPAs and pale ales to a Chili Pepper Pale Ale and Coconut Porter. Rustic, communal, and genuinely welcoming, with trivia nights, live music, and a pile of board games.
Dog friendly, inside and out, which makes it a Breckenridge institution rather than just a brewery. There are now two locations, and the Main Street taproom is walkable from downtown.
8. Breckenridge Distillery

The world's highest distillery, producing bourbon that has won serious awards alongside vodka and gin that surprise people who came for the whiskey.
Take the guided tour on Airport Road to see the process and taste through the range, then stay for dinner in the restaurant. They run a free round-trip shuttle that will collect you from your rental and bring you home, so nobody has to drive.
Short on time? The Main Street tasting room offers flights and bottles without the trip out to Airport Road.
9. Boreas Pass Road, Winter Edition

Originally a narrow-gauge railroad route, Boreas Pass Road closes to vehicles in winter and becomes one of the best snowshoe and cross-country routes in the area.
The grade is gentle because it was built for trains, which makes it genuinely accessible rather than a slog. You get panoramic views, remnants of the mining past including old cabins and structures, and considerably more solitude than the resort.
Park at the winter closure gate and go as far as you like. Rent snowshoes from Breckenridge Nordic Center, 9 Grandview Dr, (970) 453-6855, or Gold Run Nordic Center, 200 Clubhouse Dr, (970) 547-7889, both of which also have their own groomed trail systems.
Save These for Summer
Coming back when the snow melts? Three Breckenridge classics that only work in the warm months:
- AVA Rafting & Zipline, for whitewater from family floats to class V rapids, plus zipline tours over the canyons.
- The Vail Pass Path, 14 miles of paved cycling with gradual elevation gain and views the whole way.
- McCullough Gulch, an alpine hike to a turquoise lake below Quandary Peak. The access road is gated in winter.
Planning Your Days
- Book ahead for dog sledding and sleigh rides. Both sell out over the holidays and neither takes many walk-ups.
- Watch the closure days. Country Boy Mine is shut Mondays and Tuesdays, Golden Horseshoe is shut Mondays, and the ice arena's public sessions vary daily.
- Altitude is real. Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet. Take your first day easy and drink more water than feels necessary.
- Use the free shuttle. The town's free bus system plus the Breckenridge Distillery shuttle means you can do most of this without driving.
