Preparing for Your Trip: Documents & Requirements
Colorado has specific requirements for traveling with pets. They may feel like a hassle, but they protect everyone, including your dog.
- Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI): issued by a licensed vet within 30 days before arrival, confirming your dog is healthy and free from rabies. Some boarding facilities and parks require a CVI issued within 10 days of entry.
- Proof of Rabies Vaccination: all dogs over 3 months old need current rabies vaccination proof to enter Colorado from another state.
CVI vs. Rabies Certificate: What's the Difference?
These are not the same document. The CVI is a comprehensive health certificate that goes beyond rabies, confirming your dog is free from contagious diseases. The rabies certificate is specific, provided at the time of vaccination, showing the date administered, vaccine type, and expiration.
Note: returning to Colorado within 30 days of departure does not require a new CVI. After 30 days, you will need another before re-entering.

Leash Rules & Etiquette
- Leash required in town. All dogs must be leashed within town limits, including streets, sidewalks, parks, and trails. Fines run up to $100.
- Leash length. No specific requirement, but 6 feet is the practical standard for keeping control.
- Off-leash areas exist. Carter Dog Park is the main one. Check signage before letting your dog loose anywhere else.
- Voice control and courtesy. Not every dog on the trail wants to meet yours, and not every person does either.
Waste Removal Laws
Colorado law requires dog owners to promptly clean up and dispose of waste in any public area, including trails, parks, and sidewalks. Fines apply.
Winter-specific tip: plenty of people pick up and then leave the bag beside the trail intending to collect it on the way back. Snow covers it, and it reappears in spring. Carry it out. Pack more bags than you think you need.

They also run fat biking and sleigh rides, and the trails are well groomed and clearly marked.
Carter Dog Park

A fully fenced one-acre park with separate areas for large and small dogs, mountain views over the ski resort, and waste bags provided. Easy access to adjacent pet-friendly trails.
Two practical notes from regulars: bring your own water, since the fountains are not reliable in winter. And parking fills up fast, particularly midday when the pickleball courts are busy, so go early.
Dog-Friendly Trails
Over a hundred miles of trails around town, with Moonstone and Sunbeam Trails, Sawmill Trail, and Crystal Lake Trail all popular with dog owners. Leashes required.

The Downhill Dog

One of the highest-rated shops in Breckenridge, and a genuine delight. Fresh treats, locally sourced products, apparel, toys, and gifts, with owners who make a real fuss of every dog that comes in. There is a gumball machine filled with tennis balls.
Bring your dog in and let them pick something. The lower shelves are deliberately within nose reach.
Leashed dogs are also welcome in most Main Street shops. Look for the water bowls outside, which are a reliable signal.
Winter Events for 2026/2027
- Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas, traditionally the first Saturday of December, which falls on December 5, 2026. Dogs are welcome to join the Santa race in festive costume, followed by the lighting of the Town Tree. One of the best photo opportunities of the year.

Winter Safety for Dogs
Mountain winter is harder on dogs than most owners expect. Four things to plan for:
- Paws. Ice balls form between pads, and road salt and de-icer cause real irritation. Booties are the best solution if your dog tolerates them, paw balm if not. Rinse and dry paws after every walk.
- Altitude. Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet, higher than most Colorado ski towns. Dogs feel it too, usually as unusual fatigue or heavier breathing. Take the first day easy, keep water available constantly, and watch for a dog that is lagging when they normally would not.
- Cold. Short-haired and small breeds need a coat. So do seniors. Watch ears, tail, and paws for frostbite signs on very cold days, and keep outings shorter when temperatures drop.
- Wildlife and hazards. Moose are present in Summit County and are genuinely dangerous, particularly to dogs, which they perceive as predators. Keep your dog leashed and give moose an extremely wide berth. Also be aware of frozen creeks and ponds, which are not reliably safe to walk on.
