Winter Biking

Winter biking-specifically fat biking-has quickly become one of Breckenridge’s most popular cold-weather activities. Fat bikes are built with oversized tires (typically around 4.8 inches wide) that provide stability and grip, letting you cruise over snow-packed trails and winter terrain with ease. If you can ride a bike, you can ride a fat bike, and the experience opens up a whole new way to explore the mountains once the snow falls.

Where to Ride

  • Gold Run Nordic Center: Fat bikes are welcome on all snowshoe trails at Gold Run Nordic Center, with 13 kilometers of groomed trails ranging from beginner to advanced. The center offers rentals, and a daily or season trail pass is required. The trails wind through open meadows and forests with great views of the Tenmile Range.
  • Summit County Rec Path: The Rec Path is a multi-use, groomed trail connecting Breckenridge and Frisco. Every winter, local agencies team up to groom an eight-mile stretch for Nordic skiing, fat biking, and other non-motorized uses. The path is ideal for riders of all levels and is accessible from town.
  • Town Trails: Breckenridge maintains a network of in-town trails and bike lanes open to fat bikes during the winter. These routes are a good choice for casual riders or those looking to explore the town on two wheels.

Getting Started

Fat bikes are available for rent at several shops in Breckenridge, as well as directly at Gold Run Nordic Center. Local outfitters also offer guided tours, including rides that stop at local breweries or distilleries-perfect for those looking to combine adventure with a taste of Breckenridge.

Tips for Winter Biking

  • Stick to groomed or packed trails for the best experience-riding in deep, fresh snow is much harder than it looks.
  • Dress in layers and wear winter boots, gloves, and sunglasses or goggles.
  • Respect trail etiquette: yield to skiers when required and avoid riding on soft or muddy trails to protect the surface.
  • Check trail conditions before heading out, as ideal fat biking happens when the snow is cold and packed, not slushy.
