International Snow Sculpture Championships

January 26-31, 2010

Every year the picturesque Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge is transformed into an amazing natural gallery of sculptors working in the favorite medium of winter sports enthusiasts everywhere - snow!  Huge earthmovers work to fill 10 feet wide by 12 feet tall cubes.  These cubes are loaded with snow and volunteers compact the snow at various intervals until the cube is filled to the top.  After sitting for a few days sculptors have a 20-ton cube of snow to work with. In a few short days, these enormous snow canvasses are transformed into three-dimensional works of art. This amazing event has been around for almost 20 years. Talented artists carve these huge blocks of snow into expressive and amazingly intricate pieces of art using a unique combination of their own two hands, creative vision, and approved set of hand tools. From more whimsical scenes depicting Santa Claus or a ladybug on a flower to intriguing abstract shapes, sculptors form these creations before thousands of spectators over the course of the event.  Observers are also invited to explore the shops, boutiques, restaurants and nearby galleries offering more durable non-snow art.  This is a great way to spend an evening with the family after a day on the slopes because the sculptures take on a beautiful glow when illuminated at night.
