Fly Fishing

Breckenridge is home to great fly fishing.  From small rocky streams to large meandering rivers to high mountain lakes, there is an abundance of accessible fly fishing in and around Breckenridge. Within a one hour drive you can access five major rivers including the Blue, Eagle, Colorado, Arkansas, and South Platte Rivers.

Blue River – The Blue River is one of the most spectacular Gold Medal fisheries in Colorado if not the country.  With incredible views and big trout, you are sure to have a great day fly fishing on the Blue.  This medium sized river can be fished from the Dillon Reservoir dam to Kremmling.  Most of the public access is found between Dillon and Green Mountain Reservoirs.

Colorado River – The Colorado River can be divided into two sections Upper and Lower.  The Upper Colorado starts below Windy Gap Reservoir and extends to the Pumphouse just below Kremmling.  This section of river has as strong flow and is great for float fishing. The Lower Colorado can be wade fished at several locations, but is best for float fishing as well.  Most of the water is Class II with a few Class III rapids.

Arkansas River – Typically known for great rafting and kayaking, the fishing on the Arkansas River has been improving in recent years.  Due to heavy metal pollutants from mining, this river lacked clarity and wasn't a thriving trout home.  Recently, through the positive effects of the E.P.A SuperFund, the river has become more healthy with Browns, Rainbows, Brookies and a few Cutthroat.  The best fishing can be found near the headwaters from Independence Pass Road to the Climax Molybdenum mine.

South Platte River – Located in central Colorado, the South Platte River flows from Lake Goreoge northeast through Denver.  It is one of the best fisheries in Colorado with abundant Rainbows and Browns.  Nymph fishing tends to be the best on the South Platte.

Eagle – The Eagle River is one of the lesser known great fisheries in Colorado.  Traveling from Minturn to Dotsero, this river runs parallel to I-70 and is easily accessible from Highway 6.  Due to recent development of the area public access has become scarce.  If you can find public access, you'll enjoy great high quality Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing.

The Breckenridge fly fishing season runs year round.  In the winter, wear warm clothes and fish the Blue, South Platte and Williams Fork.  Come spring, the fishing is great.  No need to be intimidated by the high water. Summer season is perfect for dry fly fishing on all nearby rivers.  In the Fall, conditions continue to be good with fewer crowds.
