“After spending the last 4 Summers in Summit County, we look forward to returning in May for our fifth. Our primary residence is in Houston, but the unbearable Summer heat severely restricts our outdoor activities and diminishes our quality of life. Summit County, on the other hand, is a virtual outdoor playground with nearly perfect weather all Summer long!

With 55 miles of dedicated bike paths connecting the various towns, Summit County is a cyclists dream, and the endless hiking trails provide spectacular views with fields of wild flowers and a variety of animal life. The old ghost towns and mining ruins give one a perspective of the rich history of the area and the hardships of mining life in the 1800′s.

There are also plenty of options for water sports in Summit County. From Fly fishing, Whitewater rafting to Sailing Lake Dillion… or even just listening to live music at the Marina bars or Amphitheatre – we do it all!

I will definitely bring my golf clubs up again this Summer. I had a blast playing the various courses in the area last year! Having that elevation above 9000 feet makes for some interesting club selections.

On the weekends there are always a variety of events like BBQ cookoffs, Wine and Beer Festivals and all kinds of live music going on around the county. With all these things to do, we have a lot of friends and family that spend their Summer vacations with us. Thus, we rent a 2 or 3 bedroom condo each Summer to have room for everyone. While we will probably buy a place there eventually, renting makes the most sense for us now. Long term rentals are very reasonable, and we avoid the hassle of owning two houses.

After spending so much time in Summit County over the last few years, we have made many great friends there. The friendly, small town atmosphere is such a refreshing change from big city life, we make a point of returning once a month in the winter see everyone. Six months would be far to long to be away!”

So maybe some of you have heard the term “gaper” and aren’t exactly sure what this means? The Urban Dictionary defines the term “gaper” as “A skier or snowboarder who is completely clueless. Usually they are distinguished by their bright colored clothes and a gaper gap, the skin exposed between goggles and helmet/hat. Gapers also do the “Gaper Tuck” which is an attempt at being a ski racer by tucking (their poles), however, it is done incorrectly with the poles sticking straight up like thunderbolts and lightening, very very frightening!”

In honor of these folks, ski towns across the nation have established what is known as ‘Gaper Fools Day’ or Gaper Day for short. So on April 1^st, when the spring conditions are beginning to peak, locals find their wackiest retro gear and hit the slopes. Rear entry boots, one pieces, and skate skis are just the beginning of this silly tradition!

It’s a day of harmless fun and everyone is encouraged to join in! This year in Breckenridge Gaper Day lands right smack in the middle of Spring Fever and preceding a day of sunshine, neon colors and spring riding all of the Breckenridge “Gapers” will be treated to a FREE concert, at the base of Peak 8, put on by Donavon Frankenreiter – an American musician and surfer who has made his name through his laid back, relaxing yet upbeat tunes (best known for his single “Free”).

Spring Fever is based on embracing the biological change that occurs in humans as the seasons switch from winter to spring. • A town-wide St. Patrick’s Day celebration
  • Burke & Riley’s : Opens at 7am with an Irish Breakfast Buffet. Later in the day, enjoy the sounds of the old country with bagpipers from Denver’s Emerald Society as well as Celtic dancers showing off their moves throughout the afternoon. The small cover charge gets you your first green beer and a Burke & Riley’s Tshirt.
  • Napper Tandy’s : This celebration begins at 11am  with a true Irish buffet with corned beef and cabbage and Guiness on tap. Live Celtic music will begin at 12pm and can be enjoyed from, arguably, one of the best decks in Breckenridge! At 5pm enjoy a performance by Breckenridge’s own Celtic Step dancers who have been professionaly trained by cast members from Lord of the Dance.
  • Blue River Bistro : Looking for something a little more upscale? From 4-7pm the BRB will be preparing the traditional Irish favorites with an avant-guarde twist! In addition, it is rumored that a new St Patrick’s Day martini will be introduced to go along with the fabulous appetizers! Enjoy jazz performances with an Irish twist by Larry Copeland.

• The Inaugural "Rockstar Throwback Throwdown" Halfpipe Competition – Saturday, April 7th
  • Watch some of the world’s best riders as they compete in this legendary two-fold challenge on both a 6-foot mini-pipe (designed to replicate the first ever halfpipe built in Breckenridge in 1985) and the Breck Freeway Super Pipe (the longest halfpipe in the world!). This event will be based on the olden days, when snowboarding was just coming into fuition, so along this theme riders (and fans!) will be encouraged to done their 80s throwback gear! • Ripperoo’s Mascot Olympics
  • Watch as our own Ripperoo competes with his mascot buddies from all over Colorado in a wacky obstacle course at Peak 8.
• The Breck 5 Peaks Mountaineering Race, North America’s longest ski mountaineering race
  • April 7th, 2012. This year’s third annual race promises to kick it up a notch with some steep bootpacks and more ridge-walks. Stay tuned for details!
• The 16th Annual Imperial Challenge bike & ski race
  • Unlike no other endurance competition around, the Imperial Challenge starts with bikeriders climbing the roads of Peak 7 to a transition at the base of Peak 8. From there, they click into their skis, slap on their skins and ascent the mountain, making a final break back down the fill toward the finish line at the base of Peak 8. While the race takes a lighthearted approach, the event is a true test of fitness and not one for the weak!
• Easter Egg Hunts & Easter weekend activities on the mountain - Saturday, April 7th & Sunday, April 8th
  • Join us for one of the largest Easter Egg Hunts in Colorado! This 2-day hunt extends all around the mountain and throughout Downtown Breckenridge. Bring the family to the Breckenridge Recreation Center for the annual Great Egg Scramble. Afterwards, enjoy an adult themed Hoppy Hour for participants 21 years of age and up at participating bars and restaurants.
• The KSMT Apring Beer Festival – Saturday, April 14th
